The Lucky Boy Mine was located by Basil MacAdair in 1877. With its ore averaging only $25.00 a ton, it had been overshadowed in early years by richer mines such as the Charles Dickens and General Custer. After lying dormant for three years, the Lucky Boy bought the General Custer Mill and reopened in 1895, soon becoming the most important property in the district. It operated until 1904, when ore values dropped and the cost of pumping water out of the deep shafts skyrocketed. Its shutdown in 1904 signaled the beginning of the end for Custer and Bonanza.
