The staurolite crystals occur as reddish brown idioblasts, one tenth of an inch up to one and one-half inches in length ( Henika 1971 describes crystals up to 7 cm), and are altered wholly or in part to sericite and chlorite. They contain numerous inclusions of small garnets, which weather out giving the appearance of pits in the staurolite crystals.
These sericite pseudomorphs after staurolite are often ground to improve appearance.
Staurolite can be collected legally at the Fairy Stone Hunt Site behind the Fairy Stone Pit Stop. Digging or possession of tools for digging is not permitted. Crystals can be found on the slopes of the dried creek bed of the hunt site.
Single crystals are the most common, but are often ignored due to their simplistic shape.
