Located in the heart of the Illinois - Kentucky fluorspar district, the Hastie family has mined the Spar Mountain area since the late 1960's. Because of the depressed price of fluorite, they sell crushed stone (Ste. Genevieve Limestone and Rosiclare Sandstone). Over the years, they have mined fluorite by removing pillars from Benzon Mining Companys operations in the 1920's and the Ozark-Mahoning Companys underground mines in the 1950's as well as small deposits missed by those companies. Today they quarry around the fluorite. As of the summer 2004, no visitors (collectors or educational groups) are permitted in the mine area.
