Roman gold mine.
The mineralisation is bound to quartzites and quartz phyllites within Silurian metasediments.
The gold is very fine-grained (1-170 micron).

This was the largest Roman mine in Portugal, and consists of three open pits running WNW-ESE, two of which are of an impressive size (Ribeirinha and Covas), the largest approximately 500m long, 100m wide and 80m to 100m deep. There are also numerous shafts and galleries (the largest of which is 250 metres in length with a 5 x 1.5m cross-section). It is estimated that 10 millions tons of material have been mined here.

Minas Romanas de Tresminas.
Exploração mineira a céu aberto, pelo processo de cortas, com a configuração de desfiladeiro com alargamentos irregulares, assente em três locais de extracção, o Lago de Covas, com um comprimento de 430 m e uma profundidade de c. de 60 m, Lago da Ribeirinha, com um comprimento de c. de 370 m e uma profundidade que ultrapassa os 100 m e os Laginhos, com um comprimento de c. de 100 m e uma profundidade de 9 m, embora neste último local a exploração praticamente se limitou à extracção subterrânea. Para o transporte, bem como para escoamento das águas, foram abertas transversalmente à orientação do filão, galerias principais, apresentando sempre um declive em direcção à superfície. A Galeria do Pilar tem um troço transitável de c. de 250 m, a Galeria do Texugo tem c. de 80 m, a Galeria dos Alargamentos, tem c. de 150 m, a Galeria dos Morcegos, com c. de 150 m, Galeria do Buraco Seco, transitável em toda a sua extensão, com c. de 90 m. Junto à zona de extracção existem áreas residênciais, cuja escavação, ainda que feita em pequenos sectores, permitiu identificar cerâmica e espólio numismático do primeiro terço do séc. 1 d.C.; foram detectadas, em redor das cortas, 4 zonas de preparação do minério, bem como um vasto depósito de água de formato semicircular, a NO do povoado, com um raio de c. de 30 m; a c. de 300 m a SE da Corta de Covas encontra-se uma estrutura com um muro em terra batida, possivelmente um pequeno Anfiteatro, de construção de madeira e terra.
