Enstatite Chondrite, high-iron [EH5; S3]
Fall, 3 January 1903, 13.8 kg

At 11 P.M. a brite bolide was seen, four detonations were heard, and a 13.78 kg stone was seen to fall near St. Mark’s mission Station in the Transakei region. St. Mark's is now classified as an EH4 Enstatite Chondrite. Enstatite Chondrite are distinguished by their bulk chemistry, unusually earth-like oxygen isotope ratios, abundant Enstatite (an iron-free pyroxene) and several other unusual highly reduced mineral assemblages. The high-iron (EH) chemical group is further distinguished by small chondrules, metal (~10 vol%) and the invariable presence of niningerite (MgS) and perryite (a silicide). The petrologic type EH4 chondrites are characterized by abundant chondrules, homogenized olivine and recrystallized fine-grained matrix.
St. Mark’s has also experienced significant pre-terrestrial shock (Shock Stage S3)
