An occurrence located approximately 1.4 miles northeast of the intersection of Ohio Route 4 and Ohio Route 113 in Groton Township, Erie County, Ohio. The locality is located near a major classification yard, approximately 5 miles in length, for the Norfolk Southern Railway, formerly operated by the Norfolk and Western Railroad and prior to that the Chicago, New York and St. Louis Railroad (Nickel Plate).
The locality is noted for producing unusually large crystals of pyrite that have begun to alter to goethite, which formed in clay-filled cavities in the limestone just below the contact with the Olentangy Shale.
This is one of the rare occurrences where the description of the locality has changed from the first to the second edition in Ernest Carlson’s Minerals of Ohio. Included are the descriptions and citation pages between the first and second edition. The descriptions are both are under the heading of Pyrite, then Erie County.
First edition:
3. Large cubes of pyrite in Olentangy Shale. Outcrop near pond in railroad yard about ½ east of intersection of Ohio routes 4 and 113 east of Bellevue, Groton Township.
Second edition:
3. Nodules and large (up to 3.5 cm across) cubes of pyrite with goethite and gypsum loose in clay rich soil. The Middle Devonian Prout Limestone is exposed in a low ridge that runs northeast from Strongs Ridge to just south of dirt road, about 1.4 miles northeast of intersection of Ohio routes 3 and 113, east of Bellevue, Groton Township.
