A historical railroad cut, approximately two-thirds of a mile in length is exposed between Cedar Glen Parkway and Mayfield Road in the “Little Italy” neighborhood, Cleveland, Ohio, near Cleveland Heights. This railroad cut exposes the Upper Devonian Chagrin Shale Member. Carlson (1991, 2015) incorrectly noted that the locality was in Cleveland Heights.
This cut was first observed by Dr. Frank Van Horn (1910), Western Reserve University (now known as Case Western Reserve University) in 1909. During this time the New York Central was building and excavating the cut to build its Cleveland Short Line (now owned by CSX), parallel to the existing New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad (now owned by Norfolk Southern). The cut was observed to be 10 to 20 feet deep, overlain by an additional 2 to 3 feet of glacial till.
Van Horn (1910) noted that the shale contained pyrite and marcasite nodules, along with efflorescence of melanterite. In his paper, he observed small “anticlinal folds” in the shale and believed that they were caused when the concretions in the shale altered from an iron sulfide to an iron sulfate due to the hydration of the exposed sulfides. The following year he returned to the site and noted that these structures had been weathered away (Van Horn, 1910, p. 771-773).
In 1955, the Cleveland Rapid Transit Authority further expanded the cut to the east when the Red Line was built.
Although it is impossible to directly access the railroad cut (as the tracks are owned by CSX, Norfolk Southern and RTA), it can be observed at the intersection of Cornell Road and Circle Road at Case Western Reserve University’s campus. The Chagrin Shale is also exposed as roadcuts on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and again at Stokes Boulevard, both Cleveland. The Chagrin Shale is also exposed along the Doan Brook in multiple places between North Park Boulevard (Cleveland Heights) and Fairhill Road (Cleveland and Shaker Heights).
