Penn Central Railroad cut; Pennsylvania Railroad cut
An occurrence located 1.0 km (0.6 mile) NE of Marshallville. This locality was briefly described by Ver Steeg (1940) who noted that sphalerite, pyrite, calcite and baryte were found in fossiliferous concretions in a railroad cut.
This particular railroad line was operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 1880s to 1968, when the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with the New York Central to become the ill-fated Penn Central Railroad. Portions of this line became abandoned by Penn Central after a flood washed a portion of the line north of Holmesville. The section from Clinton to Orrville (where this cut is) was abandoned by Penn Central's successor, the Consolidation Rail Corporation (Conrail) in 1986 and the rails were removed shortly thereafter.
