The Kennedy Mine (Sec 29& 30 T47N R28W) was the earliest mine opened on the Cuyuna Range. The first shaft was sunk in 1907. The town of Cuyuna quickly sprung up near the developing mine. The first ore was shipped out by rail in 1911. The mine was owned and operated by the Rodgers-Brown Ore Company. By the time of its closing in 1925 it had produced over 2.5 million tons of ore. All mining was underground. The mine tapped into multiple ore bodies in a tightly folded band of the Proterozoic Trommald Formation. The mine was adjacent to Rabbit Lake. Later the Lake was partially drained to alllow open pit mining in the lake bed (Rabbit Lake Mine, Robert Mine). The deepening and widening of Rabbit Lake as it re-filled after mining ceased has absorbed most traces of the Kennedy Mine. The ore rock was described by Harder and Johnson (1918) as mainly "brown ocherous limonite" formed by secondary alteration of the banded iron formation. Other major rock types reportedly present include "argillaceous ferorus carbonate rock", "hematitic schist" and "slatey iron carobnate". Layers of chloritic and ampibole-bearing schists were thought to be metamoprhosed igneous rocks, possibly intrusive. The ore rock was variably rich in manganese.
