Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Old Mammon Mine; Razor Back Mine; Morand and Peterson property; Pioneer Gold Mine; Serpent Mine
A former underground Au-Ag-Cu mine located on 5 unpatented claims in sec. 24, T10S, R4E, at the western foot of the Slate Mountains, about 1¼ miles ENE of North Komelik, W of Prieta Peak, and about 20 miles South of the old Casa Grande station on the railroad. Discovered 1892 by John Morand & Peterson. Worked intermittently until mid-1897. Reopened late 1932 and closed 1938.
Geological setting is a shallow basin floored with Precambrian schistose, sandy slates that strike N20W & dip 50NE. These slates are cut by numerous veins of white quartz locally stained by limonite and copper minerals and contain erratically distributed free gold.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in schist. The ore bodies are tabular, strike N60E, dip 70NW, and are 0.91 meters wide. The principal vein, where stoped, strikes N60E and dips 70NW. Some 200 feet NE of the shaft, the strike changes to N20W. The vein ranges from a few inches to 3 feet wide and averages 20 inches (47 cm)in width. Vein is hosted in Pinal Schist. Ore control was along quartz veins. About 20 feet farther SE, trenching exposed a parallel vein averaging 20 inches (47 cm) wide for a length of 50 feet.
Regional features include NW-trending normal faults approximately 200 meters E of the shafts. Quartz Diorite Of Cretaceous-Paleozoic age is 1 mile S and E of the mine. A NW-trending granodiorite dike was mapped approximately 200 meters S of the main shaft. Other granodiorite dikes are NE-trending in the Slate Mountains. The age of mineralization is either Precambrian or Late Cretaceous-Tertiary, which is the age of the granodiorite
Workings include a 270 foot deep inclined shaft connected with several hundred feet of drifts, raises & stopes. The stoping extends on both sides of the shaft to a depth of 250 feet and for a length of about 80 feet on an ore shoot 1 to 3 feet wide. Some trenching and 7 shafts nearby (1977). A 20 stamp amalgamation mill was installed. Production was about $35,000 in Au (period values) from 2,500 tons of ore.
