An U-V-Mn occurrence/group of claims/prospects located in sec. 32, T28N, R12E, G&SRM, 2.2 km (1.3 miles) SSW of Sand Springs Mesa (coordinates of record), 20 miles ESE of Cameron, some distance S of Tuba City and some distance E of Gray Mountain (town). Owned by the Hosteen Nez Mining Co.

Mineralization is an U-V-Mn deposit hosted in Early Jurassic sandstone. The The ore body is 3.66 meters thick and 21.34 meters long. The ore occurs in lenses in a replacement deposit. Mineralization replaces clay pebbles, coats fractures and bedding surfaces, and impregnates Mn concretions and carbonized fossil wood. The shaly sandstone is varicolored and other sandstone contains clay pebbles. Local rocks include Quaternary surficial deposits, undivided and/or rocks of the Glen Canyon Group.

Mineralization is in vari-colored shale and sandstone, tentatively assigned to the upper part of the Chinle formation of late Triassic age. The North deposit is exposed in the walls of a draw; radioactive material is in the south edge of a lens composed of sandy shale, sandstone and a few clay pebbles. A yellow uranium mineral partly replaces clay pebbles, coats fractures & bedding surfaces, and impregnates manganese-rich concretions and carbonized fossil wood. Manganese concretions commonly very rich in uranium.

Black carbonaceous conglomerate and sandy shales in the Kayenta Formation manganese oxides (psilomelane) and carbonized wood with secondary uranium minerals. Radiation is 6 times background.

Uraninite, tyuyamunite and possibly becquerelite are associated with carbonized wood and manganese oxides in lenticular bodies up to 70 feet long and 12 feet thick. Mineralization also replaces clay pebbles, coats fractures and bedding surfaces in a shaly sandstone of the lower Kayenta Formation.

Between the North and South deposits, the float contains uraniferous manganese nodules which evidently weathered out of the very small, widely separated concretionary deposits.

The South deposit caps the summit of a small knoll. Its uranium occurs chiefly in manganese-rich concretions and partly silicified fossil wood, but locally the sandstone itself is radioactive.

Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of rim stripping and several short adits.

Production was 121 tons of ore @ 0.17% U3O8; 0.56% V2O5 (1957).

Analysis test results: 0.037% e U3O8; 0.035% U3O8.
