The Beaver occurrence, consisting of silver-lead-copper bearing veins, is located about 21 kilometres north-west of Kaslo, British Columbia, on the south-facing slopes of Beaver Mountain.
The following quote is from B.C. Government site “Minfile”- Minfile No. 082KSW 046, current to 1995:
“Silver-lead-zinc mineralization occurs in the Triassic Slocan Group, locally consisting primarily of black fissile phyllites with interbedded limestone, calcareous phyllites and brown gritty quartzites. The general structural trend is 310 degrees, dipping generally southwesterly. Greenstones and ultramafic rocks of the Permian Kaslo Group unconformably underlie the Slocan Group to the east, also hosting silver-lead-zinc mineralization. Satellite stocks, dikes and sills are generally correlative with the Nelson batholith to the immediate south. Late stage lamprophyre dikes are also common.
Hostrocks of the Beaver showing consist of trachyte and greenstone and intercalated, dark tuffaceous sedimentary beds of the Kaslo Group with later serpentinized dikes.
Quartz veins exposed in the lower adit, at 2250 metres elevation, have an average strike of 055 to 060 degrees and dip 60 degrees to the southeast. Veins are discontinuous and lie within a narrow, straight fault-fissure.
Mineralization consists principally of argentiferous galena and lesser chalcopyrite within an alteration gangue of malachite, azurite, anglesite, linarite, pyrite and quartz hosted in silicified greenstone. Galena was observed in clusters and pods up to 5 centimetres thick and 60 centimetres up to 15 metres long. The host vein itself is up to 3.5 metres wide. ”
Comments by Giles Peatfield regarding some of the minerals reported:
Caledonite: This was reported in 1921 (Anon, 1921), and the reference referred to by Palache, Berman and Frondel (1951), and by Traill (1980). “Caledonite occurs sparingly along with linarite on specimens from the Beaver group of claims on Beaver mountain in the Slocan mining division, B.C.” (Anon, 1921).
“Copper carbonates”: Cairnes (1935) reported “copper carbonates” but was not specific. A specimen (#4285) in the collection of the Pacific Museum of Earth (University of British Columbia) includes malachite.
Linarite: This is the mineral of main interest at the Beaver occurrence. Johnston (1911) described “very fine” specimens of this mineral in galena; he analyzed the mineral, and described how one perfect crystal was subjected to crystallographic measurement by Prof. V. Goldschmidt of Heidelberg, Germany. The Pacific Museum of Earth (University of British Columbia) has several specimens from this locality in their collection.
Sphalerite: Starr (1928), in his report of a field examination of the property, mentions small amounts of “blende”; no other workers mention it. One would be surprised if it were not there.
Note added in proof: Dr. Scott suggests I should add a note that, from a collecting point of view, the locality is extremely difficult of access, and in any event the best linarite crystals seem to have been collected in the 1920’s and there is essentially nothing left of interest to the collector.
