de Milhou's reef; Emerald mine

Located approximately 9kms NNE of Emmaville and approximately 8kms South-West of Torrington.

Operated as underground workings, shafts, adits and shallow pits and first worked for emeralds circa 1891 by the Emerald Proprietary company.

Originally mined for tin. Emeralds were observed in the dumps around 1890 and subsequently, the area was re-mined. The deposit is related to the intrusion of pegmatites and aplites into mudstones and siltstones. The emeralds occur in pegmatite dikes; the crystals are embedded in granitic cavities that have weathered to kaolinite.
