The Dereköy ophiolitic mélange contains diabase, serpentinite, locally mafic rock products, and blocks with different ages and lithological characteristics. The main blocks within the mélange consist of Jurassic–Cretaceous radiolarite–chert blocks, Jurassic–Cretaceous limestone blocks, and Permian limestone blocks. The Permian limestone blocks are thought to have probably been derived from Permian limestone olistoliths within the Karakaya Formation. The Jurassic–Cretaceous limestone blocks, on the other hand, have been suggested to be derived from the Bilecik Limestone. The Mn-bearing levels in the study area are macroscopically observed as dark grey to blackish-brown zones, locally showing rusty weathering surfaces. In samples associated with radiolarite/chert, the Mn-bearing parts occur together with siliceous and thin-bedded cherty-radiolaritic rocks, locally as banded, lenticular, and irregular masses. In these samples, the Mn-bearing zones are mostly developed within the siliceous host rock and display a relationship with bedding and fracture systems.
