A former gold mine on the Mouse Trap Line of load.
Historically speaking, the mine is on the Welcome Stranger line of lode (or Welcome Stranger reef), named after one of the mines on the lode. (The Mousetrap line of lode is to the east running from the Mousetrap mine in the north to the Knock Out lease in the south).
Hidden Treasure is one of the claims taken out by the Neeld family when they discovered the goldfield 1893 (goldfield declared March 1894). Shortly after it was sold to Fowke and party (spelt variously in the newspapers: Falk, Fawke, Foulke), the most common spelling given priority here. Fowke christened the claim the Hidden Treasure in May 1894.
It took two years of hard work sinking the shaft to reach the main reef. Here they found fine and coarse gold with sulphides. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are mentioned, although there could be other species. The miners had to contend with much water, and a pipe was laid to supply water to Goughs No. 2 Battery to the south-east.
The government (for reasons yet to be determined) refused to convert the claim to a lease. Doing so would give the miners a more secure title, and allow them to mine ground outside of their miners right. Mining was only found from 1894-1900.
The mine site now is on the edge of West Wyalong, in an area of scrub, with little evidence of its existence.
