The Deep Ocean Pocket is a submerged offshore locality near Tampa Bay, FL, ~50 yard long × ~20 yard wide, buried in thick mud with near-zero visibility & strong currents; position difficult to relocate even by experienced divers. Produces chalcedony pseudomorphs after coral formed by silica replacement of coral skeletons; the original corals formed roughly 25 to 30 Ma during the Miocene Epoch. Material is distinct from typical Tampa occurrences: rare blue→black chalcedony formed in deeper ocean pockets where saltwater & decaying organic material interacted with silica under reducing conditions. Specimens characteristically show blue→black coloration rather than red→honey tones; black zones may show banding visible under UV. Material occurs as voided coral masses similar to other Florida occurrences, but this site yields an uncommon color range & a relatively small proportion of polishable pieces; exceptional specimens are rare. Recovery conducted in coordination with academic & museum partners, with reference material stored for study. The locality was discovered in 2020 by divers Rick Cochrane & Henry Sadler.
