Tourist mine operating under the name "Broken Boot Mine". According to the mine's website, Olav Seim and James Nelson opened the mine in 1878 and operated it for 26 years, closing in 1904 after producing a total of about 15,000 ounces of gold. The mine also produced large tonnages of pyrite for manufacturing sulfuric acid, which proved more profitable than the gold production. The mine reopened briefly during WWI to produce iron and sulfur from pyrite for the war effort.
The U.S. Bureau of Mines noted in 1954 that "[i]n the 30 years since the mine shut down quantities of melanterite and chalcanthite have formed on the faces of the stopes."
The mine was refurbished as a tourist attraction in 1954 and has offered underground tours to visitors every summer since. The website notes that the mine has operated longer and more successfully as a tourist operation than it did as a producing mine. Currently the site is managed on a not-for-profit basis jointly by the Broken Boot Mine Committee and the Deadwood Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau.
