Schloss Stolpen - Basaltwand
The Stolpen Castle basalt cliff actually forms part of the Stolpen Castle and is located near the main gate to the castle.
The basalt cliff is a series of basaltic columnar joints that are located on Stolpen Castle Hill. The Hill itself is part of the extinct Stolpen Volcano (~30 Ma).
There is also a small abandoned quarry at the West-South-West edge of the Stolpen Castle Hill.
Stolpen Castle Hill is regarded as the type locality for basalt.
