An abandoned manganese mine located near Woodstock. The mine is comprised of pits and tunnels, working an ore deposit along the bedding of the Monterey Sandstone at the bottom of Little Fort valley, Massanutten Mountain.

Ore is a well crystallized Manganese Oxide, deposited in a vein-like body and found coating the walls of the crevice in which it occurs, often as a cement binding fragments of conglomerate and penetrating the contiguous sandstone. Bedding of the Sandstone dips approximately 45 degrees northwest, width of vein varied from two feet to nine feet, with occasional pinches where it is cut out entirely. Shaft is said to have been cut to a depth of 110 feet.

Note: The Physical, chemical, optical and crystallographic properties of the pyrolusite from the Powells Fort mine were described by Watson, T. L., and Wherry, E.T., in 1918, and Watson concludes that this mineral has not been derived from manganite as once believed, but is primary.
