A group of copper mines who were known by the name of 'Minas da Cabeça Alta' (Cabeça Alta Mines). That was actually the name of the company that explored them and also the name of one of the claims.
These mines worked during the second half of the 19th century till the beginning of the 20th century.
The mines that constituted this group were:
- Coutada de Monsaraz;
- Cherez (or Xerez) e Barcas;
- Cerro da Peninha;
- Cabeça Alta;
- D. Amada de Baixo.
All these mines were flooded, since 2004, by the Alqueva dam reservoir. Only a small area of Coutada de Monsaraz is still above the water level.
