This ore deposit was discovered 8. August 1766 by Elling Rønningen, who transferred the rights to the Røros Kobberverk mining company.
However, Elling's assistent, revealed this find to several people in Stuggudal, and a Ole Aas reported about this find to the Selbu Kobberverk mining company.
A fight over the mining rights was won by the Selby company, resulting in sporadic activity til 1895. Early 1900's the mining rights were taken over by an English company, the Kjøli Mines LTD, who built a cable tram to Reitan. At its most the mine employed 300 workers, and an entire village was built around the mine.
From 1930 til WW2 the municipality worked the mine in order to keep workers in employment.
The mines produced ca. 250.000 tons of ore containing 1.9-2.4% Cu, 0.02-0.2% Zn and 45.9-46.8% S during the period 1773 til 1941.
In the same area, similar but smaller deposits are among others: Midtgruben, Godthåb, Røros Menna and Svensk Menna. These produced a total of 15-20.000 tons of Cu-ore.
The deposits are hosted by banded meta-argillites and more massive metagreywackes, containing thin layers of volcanoclastic sediments. The sulphide bodies are mainly composed of massive pyrite and/or pyrrhotite with variable contents of chalcopyrite and sphalerite.

The canadian exploration company Capella Minerals Ltd is currently doing exploration work in the Kjøli area (2021, Geo365.no).

The Kjøli mine deposits identified by Capella Minerals are numbered 1 through 18. Kjøli 11, 13, 14, and 15 cover the Killingdal Mine, Ålen, Holtålen, Trøndelag, Norway area.
