A former Au-Zn-Mo (trace) occurrence/mine located in the NW¼ sec. 22, T28N, R18W, G&SRM, in the eastern part of the White Hills, 9 miles W of Garnet Mountain, on private land. Discovered in 1885 by Patterson, Rowe & Fox. Former owner/operators include Walter Fleck, Barkley, Skoglie, John Larlow, Malco Gold Mining Company, C.L. Fleck, and Ben F. Griffith. Produced 1900 to 1906. The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 500 meters.

The Excelsior mine is about a mile northeast of the Eldorado and O. K. mines, in the low foothills near the edge of Hualpai Valley and about 500 feet above it, on the north side of O. K. Wash. The mine is developed to a depth of about 100 feet, principally by inclined shafts, drifts, and stopes, aggregating 500 feet of underground work. The production is reported to be $5,000.

The country rock is a coarse reddish granite associated with black amphibolite schist. The vein dips about 45° NW. It is from 1 to 4 feet in width and is locally occupied by gouge only. The ore shoot contains deeply iron-stained gold-bearing quartz or.ore. It varies from three-fourths to 1 foot in width and occurs mainly on the hanging wall. The ore is said to be cyaniding ore, only a small percentage of the values yielding to amalgamation.


Mineralization is a deposit hosted in schist and granite. The ore body dips 45NW at a width of 1.22 meters (4 feet). The Au mineralization is associated with Cretaceous massive, white quartz veins. Thin quartz-carbonate veinlets parallel foliation in a highly foliated zone that strikes N35-40E. This zone shows silicification, sericitization and flooding by CO3. It occurs between gneiss and porphyritic monzogranite. The bulk of alteration and quartz veinlets are concentrated in a zone about 7 meters wide. Alteration is propyllitic. Ore occurs mainly in the hanging wall. Associated rocks include Late Cretaceous-Neoproterozoic quartz monzonite, pegmatite and granite. Local rocks include Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks.

Workings include underground openings with a length of 152.4 meters and an overall depth of 30.48 meters and comprised of inclined shafts, drifts and stopes.
