A formerly vacant, rocky lot in a commercial/light industrial zone in southern Torrington that was leveled (probably for eventual development) during 2020 leaving a flat area at road level and an upper level separated by an approximately 6-meter-high, 300-meter-long N-S rock cut. The cut exposes the Ordovician Ratlum Mountain Formation (granofels and schist) and a few small intruding granitic pegmatites. Thin, small Alpine clefts in the Ratlum Mountain Formation host microcrystals of quartz, sphalerite, calcite, anatase, albite, adularia, hemimorphite, wulfenite, stilbite, heulandite-Ca, synchysite and pyrite. This is a suite of microminerals similar to those found in the Ratlum Mountain Formation at the state Routes 8 and 118 interchange in nearby Harwinton. There are small miarolitic cavities in at least one of the pegmatites. The most obvious accessory mineral in the pegmatites is schorl, more concentrated near the walls and showing the directional, oriented growth (subperpendicular to the contacts) typical of pegmatite.
