The Bjørkåsen sulphide deposit is located in Ballangen municipality in Nordland. The area is called Ofoten (which covers several municipalities).
It consists of 2 sulphide lenses developed along a sulphide impregnated horizon in garnet-mica schist of Cambro-silurian age intruded by granite and gabbro (Karup-Møller 1973).
It was mined from 1915-1924, and about 523 000 ton ore was extracted.

Formula: Bi2S3
Description: Karup-Møller (1973) reports a secondary Bi mineral that he says is possibly a very fine-grained mixture of bismuthinite and a Ca-bearing gangue mineral. See also Neumann (1985)

Description: Occurs as 0,05 mm rounded to slightly elongated grains mainly along the giessenite-pyrrhotite contact zone.

Description: Oftedal mention "lead- bismuth" (Blyvismutglans, cited after Neumann 1985) in galena, and he assumes that it can be a galenobismutite.

Habit: Regulary shaped needles < 3mm in length; grains
Description: Occur as thin needles in quartz or as elongated and irregular grains up to a few mm in size in galena and pyrrhotite.

Description: Occurs as short lamellae up to 0.1 mm in length, and also as irregular shaped grains up to 0,05mm in diameter. Neumann (1985) questions the identity of joseite. He states that the microprobe analysis presented by Karup-Møller (1973) doesn't correspond with Joseite.
