A former small underground Cu-Ag-Pb-Au-Sb mine located in the center (center S½N½) of sec. 30, T.23S., R.16E. (protracted), 1.0 mile NW of the Four Metals Mine, less than ¼ mile to the NE of the Gladstone Mine, 7 miles W of Red Hill; 4 miles NW of Washington Camp, at about 5,000 feet of elevation. Discovered in 1888 by Antone Proto. Produced 1903-1942. Owned at times, or in part, by the Gladstone Mining Co. (1903); the Proto Brothers (1910-1918); Fulton (1929); Sullivan (1930); and, Dale Higgins. Owned by Mr. J. W. Forsythe (1966). Operated by the Hanna Mining Co. (1966). The Proto and Gladstone properties were merged in 1930, forming a total of 10 unpatented claims. The shaft is located on the USGS map. NOTE: Alternate coordinates provided: 31.3969N, 110.7511W.

Mineralization is a 2½ to 5 foot (1.52 meters) wide drusy and banded quartz vein that strikes N-S and dips 80ºE. into the mountain, with a dike or intrusive mass of Laramide granodiorite forming the footwall and the quartz monzonite country rock the hanging wall. Deposits occur in the form of subordinate veins, lenses, stringers, and seams in intrusive fissures, joints, sheeting planes, and other fractures in quartz monzonite and diorite. The vein at surface is highly iron-stained. There is strong wall rock alteration. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore concentration was oxidation at near surface. Mineralization accompanied or followed intrusion of a dike. The Gladstone and Proto Mine groups cover the central-6000 feet of the 5 mile long fissure system, with a known extent from the Buena Vista group on the south to the Morning Glory Mine on the north.

Tectonic elements include the Guajolote Fault Bloack. The NW-trending inferred Guajolote Fault lies to the east of the deposits. Downthrow is to the east.

Workings include shafts (one at 100 feet or more) and tunnels. Production since the early 1900's would be some 1,200 tons of ore averaging about 8% Cu, 3 oz. Ag/T, and minor Pb & Au. Production data was included in the figures for the Gladstone-Proto Mine group. The above data describes the Proto Mine; other claims in the Gladstone-Proto Mine group described under the Gladstone mine group.
