A former small underground Cu-Ag-Au-Pb-Zn mine group located on a group of 8 unpatented claims in west-central sec. 30, T.23S., R.16E. (protracted), on the north side of Providencia Canyon, 4.0 miles NW of Washington Camp, 1.0 mile W of the Four Metals Mine, less than ¼ mile SW of the Proto Mine, about ½ mile NE of the Marché prospect, 6 miles E of Nogales International Airport, at an elevation of about 4,700 feet, on National Forest land. Group of 3 prospects located on USGS map. Discovered in 1888 by Antone Proto and Gladstone. Produced 1916-1951. Owned at times, or in part, by the Smith and Fulton (1926-1930); Raymond and Sullivan; Holland and Driscoll; the Independent Mining & Milling Co.; Mr. Hugo Miller; Michels; Proto Brothers; Bostwick; Fulton; Sullivan; Raymond & Bostwick; W.W. Todd; W.W. Todd and J.N. Moon; W.W. Todd and Bostwick, and, Mr. R.C. Blabon. Owned by Mr. J. W. Forsythe (1966). Operated by the Hanna Mining Co. (1966). The Proto and Gladstone properties were merged in 1930, forming a total of 10 unpatented claims.

Mineralization is ore in irregular vein-like bodies of chalcopyrite and oxidized copper minerals, with spotty and minor galena and sphalerite, along fault or shear zones in Laramide granodiorite. The average vein width ranges from 1-18 inches; 3 continuous ore bodies are also located on the property; 2 of the 3 ore bodies are 160 feet deep, 110 feet wide, and average 20 inches thick of 12% Cu. The Gladstone and Proto Mine groups cover the central 6000 feet of the 5-mile long fissure system, with known extent from the Buena Vista group on the south to the Morning Glory Mine on the north.

Ore control was N-S-trending quartz vein with several subsidiary veins in granodiorite. Ore shoots form lenticular shoots within the vein. Ore concentration was oxidation near surface. Minerlaization accompanied or followed intrusion of porphyritic granodiorite. Alteration was strong potassic alteration. The granodiorite is highly shattered, sheeted, and crushed.

Spotty pyrometasomatic base metal mineralization occurred along a contact of a narrow, irregular band of Pennsylvanian-Permian Naco Limestone and Tertiary granodiorite on the Arizona claim.

Tectonic elements include the Guajolote Fault Block; NW-trending, inferred Guajolote Fault lies to the east of the deposits with downthrow to the east.

Workings include tunnel and shaft operations. 1 tunnel driven into the mountain, about 300 feet long, one winze near the end of the tunnel, 100 feet deep. Mined sporadically from the early 1900's through 1951, producing some 2,000 tons of ore averaging about 8% Cu, 3 oz. Ag/T, 0.1 oz. Au/T and minor lead. Production data included in those for the Gladstone-Proto Mine group.
