Old copper mine, started in 1648, on the land of Governor John Endicott. It was located by the Ipswich River in a place then known as Blind Hole. At this time Topsfield was part of Salem. Possibly the first copper mine operated by Europeans in North America.
Re-opened in the mid-eighteenth century as Towne's Copper Mine. Reopened a final time in 1839. Two shafts, upper and lower -- the lower one sunk to a depth of about 100 feet. Dr. Charles Jackson tested the ore and his veridict was unfavorable, and the mine was soon closed again.
[Note: Location refined Jan. 2021 to match description in Toulmin (1964), namely 300 ft. WSW of the intersection of Rowley Bridge Rd. & Hill St., Topsfield.]
