Andesitic volcanics. A classic feldspar locality which has produced many loose plagioclase crystals coated with thin crusts of glassy lava. Much unexploded ordnance is left over from WWII – trespassing is prohibited and dangerous. Politically it belongs to Tokyo Prefecture, although Iwo lies far out in the Pacific Ocean to the south of Honshu Island (where the city of Tokyo itself is located).

The name by which this island is commonly known, "Iwo-jima", is actually a mistaken reading of the kanji, an error by a U.S. Navy cartographer in WW2. Iou-to is the correct name.
