While performing roadwork for the Alaska Department of Transportation in June, 2018, Great Northwest, Inc., a private construction contractor, encountered a fibrous mineral in a small BLM-permitted quarry at mile marker 222 along the Dalton Highway. The nearest town to the quarry is Wiseman (population 14), several miles away from the Dalton Highway itself, near mile marker 188, and nearly 40 miles away from the quarry.
The quarry workings produced the first confirmed occurrence of magnesiocarpholite in North America. Analytical work included PLM, EDS, XRD, and SAED.
