The Aegadian Islands, sometimes referred to as Egadi Islands or Egadi Archipelago, are an archipelago of five mountainous islands in the Mediterranean Sea off the northwest coast of Sicily, near the cities of Trapani and Marsala, with a total area of 37.45 square kilometres. The Aegadian Islands, i.e. the three main islands (Favignana, Marettimo, and Levanzo) and the minor islands of Maraone and Formica, are embraced within the municipality of Favignana.

From a geological point of view, the Aegadian Islands represent an emerged part of the Egadi Thrust Belt (Abate et al., 1995 and 1997) of Sicilian-Maghrebian system (Sulli, 2000; Nigro & Renda, 2001).
