Historic gold mine.
Located on the northern side of the upper Tararu Stream. The Mindat co-ordinates are very approximate.
Whitely and party are mentioned as working the mine in 1896 producing 71 tonnes of ore for 67 ounces of gold, then the Scandinavian Gold Mining Company took over until around 1908. The lease contained 54 acres. The original prospectors are said to have achieved a considerable amount of gold in the early days, but with only 486 tonnes crushed 1887 to 1908. The lease contained an eight stamp battery.
The country rock is propylitised andesite, with remnant dark hard bars of unaltered andesite. The veins trend north-east to south-west, named Black, Lowrie, and Nightingale reefs. The latter is the main reef, with the other two branch reefs from it. Most of the gold was found in Lowries. Gold grades decreased with depth. Pyrite was said to have a 'splendid' lustre when found in the reef, with sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite infrequently found.
