Historic gold mine.
Located on the head-waters of the Argosy Stream, a small northern tributary of the upper Tararu Stream.
The country rock is propylitised andesite, hosting auriferous veins of white quartz, containing small pockets of rich specimen stone gold, with blue-grey patches and streaks of pyrite containing Au-Ag values.
When inspected in 1908 the workings had collapsed. Crushings only occurred in 1897 and 1903. Most work was what was called the No. 1 reef about 9 inches thick. The No. 5 reef is also mentioned, but at only 4 inches thick. A shaft was sunk to a depth of 400 feet, and development work across 1895-1898 was inevitably described by the mine manager as 'promising'.
By 1898 the Argosy Gold Mining Company had been liquidated, with Samuel Cochrane McKay seeking forfeiture of the lease in the warden's court. In 1902, Joseph Govan and John Gibb applied for the claim, with a subsequent small crushing of picked stone.
