Gold was originally discovered here by F.W. Brown, however he was not able to secure a lease, the land held by the Kauri Timber Company. In 1898, prospectors Kenny and Murphy (surnames) returned to the site.
In 1899, 2.5 tonnes of test ore was sent to the Thames School of Mines, while another 2.5 tonnes was sent to the May Queen Extended battery, the ore sampled from the three reefs on the property.
The positive result from this crushing led to the formation of the Welcome Jack Gold Mining Company, possibly named after a racehorse popular in New Zealand at the time. A 5 stamp battery and tramway was erected, and Robert Inglis was appointed as mine manager. Regular prosaic mine reports followed about developments and small crushings until 1902.
Across 1903 to 1905, W. Hunter and party had taken an option over the mine.
At least officially on maps, the mine site can be reached via a walk track from near the end of Rangihau Road. What remains at the site is uncertain, and appears little visited.
During its life the mine produced 466 tonnes of ore yielding 1628 ounces of gold. The mine had two levels at 60 and 160 feet below the surface, the workings said to be inaccessible when inspected in 1912. The country rock is altered biotite rhyolite, and pumaceous tuff. The reefs trending north-west to south-east, dip steeply south, and are 6-9 inches wide. The reefs consist of white granular and cellular quartz with patches of brecciated and silicified rhyolite.
The main shoot was 200 feet long in the upper levels forming a wedge, with free gold found in solid white quartz, and sometimes in bands of pyrite, or near a clay seam which ran with the reef. The clay itself was also auriferous. Gold grades decrease with depth.
