Find, 1911; 10 kg
A meteoritic stone was found in 1911, but was believed by many to have fallen on 22 December 1902. Inspections reveal distinct chondrules and chondrule fragments within a somewhat blackened and weathered matrix. Mostly equilibrated olivine (Fa18) and nearly equilibrated low Ca-orthopyroxene are characteristic of H4 chondrites. Mineralogically the meteorite consists primarily of dominant olivine accompanied by orthopyroxene along with minor troilite and Fe-Ni metal. Plagioclase is present, but scanty. Accessory chromite, chromspinel, copper, diopside, ilmenite, and spinel have also been reported.
A relatively brief cosmic ray exposure (CRE) age of 1.9 Ma was reported by Graf and Marti (1995). In a later article, Eugster et al. (2007) argued that Cullison appeared to have experienced a rather complex sequence of events with a chondrule CRE age of 2.1 Ma slightly older than the matrix CRE age of 1.64 Ma. These differences may, perhaps, reflect two separate collisional events.
Moderately large masses (m> 1kg) were obtained by the United States National Museum, the Natural History Museum ( London) and The Center for Meteorite Studies at Arizona State University (Tempe) with several smaller masses elsewhere.
