Mouramba County gets its name from Mouramba pastoral station, an aboriginal word of unknown meaning. Mouramba shaft it is assumed is also named after the station. Later there was a Mouramba mining company active at Nymagee.
Thomas Reid, Joseph Rankin and Smith were the original prospectors. Mouramba Mines Ltd sank a prospecting shaft in 1907 finding very little. Host rock ironstone, slate, quartz and quartz bearing sandstone. The gossan and near surface contained lead carbonate, probably cerussite. The Silver-Lead mine is less than 100 feet to the east.
