Ordinary Chondrite (L6)
Find, 1936; 2.3 kg
Several fragments of a meteoritic stone broken were found. Olivine (Fa26) and orthopyroxene (hypersthene) compositions are characteristic of the L group meteorites. Ramdohr identified only 5 opaques (including the expected kamacite, taenite, and troilite) so the meteorite is presumably quite weathered. A number of sulfur nodules have been found within the meteorite. A U,Th-He age of 2.58 Ga has been reported.
The largest masses have been held at the United States National Museum in Washington, DC [696 g as of 2000], at Arizona State's Center for Meteorite Studies [467.5 g in 2016], and the Natural History Museum in London [455.5 g in 2017] .
What's in a name? "Grant County" is the meteorite's proper name. The "Grant" meteorite is a large octahedral iron meteorite [482 kg] found about 1929 in the Zuni Mountains of New Mexico.
