The Sorrento Peninsula or Sorrentine Peninsula separates the Gulf of Naples to the north from the Gulf of Salerno to the south. The Lattari Mountains form the geographical backbone of the peninsula. The island of Capri lies off the western tip of the peninsula in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

This area is dominated by limestone-dolostone formations, topped by layers of arenaceous-argillaceous rocks, detrital sediments (gravels and conglomerates) and volcanic deposits (tuff and various material from the Vesuvian and Phlegraean areas).

Calcite is frequently found in the limestone outcrops along both the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast. It usually appears as amber-yellow scalenohedral crystals fluorescing light yellow. Cavities lined with small saddle-like dolomite crystals, sometimes encrusted with bitumnous substances, are common in the dolostone outcrops of the Amalfi Coast. Small hyaline quartz crystals occur in various limestone and dolostone outcrops along both coasts.

Small augite and biotite crystals, loose or embedded in little rock fragments, are commonly found in the pyroclastic deposits of the Sorrento Peninsula. According to Scacchi (1889), most of these augite crystals are ascribable to the Vesuvius eruptions of 79 AD and 1839. Augite crystals have been collected also on the seafloor near Li Galli Islands (Zambonini, 1935) and on the beaches of Positano (Russo & Punzo, 2004).
