Pallasite, PES

Found just over a kilometer from the town of Eagle Station, the Eagle Station meteorite is a Pallasite, but a very unusual one. Apparently, scientists are not the only ones to appreciate Eagle Station's unusual characteristics. Fragments from the same meteorite were apparently buried in the Turner Mounds of the Little Miami Valley in southern Ohio.

Like all Pallasites the Eagle Station Pallasite's primary constituents are olivine (~78 vol%) and Fe-Ni metal(~21vol%). The olivine (Fa20) is, however, richer in iron than most Pallasites, the 'main group' Pallasites. And, its Fe-Ni metal is richer in nickel (15.37% Ni) than the 'main group' Pallasites. Even more important, its oxygen isotope ratios differ so much from the Main Group Pallasites that to most geochemists and meteoriticists it seems almost inconceivable that the Eagle Station Pallasite (and 3 similar Pallasites) would be derived from the same original homeworld. So, in fact, Eagle Station is the prototype for the 'Eagle Station grouplet' [PES = Pallasite, Eagle Station (subtype)]. In addition to the olivine and metal, Eagle Station also has very minor amounts of orthopyroxene, Ca-rich clinopyroxene, sulfates, troilite, and schreibersite. These constituents are not that unusual, but the minor minerals also have additional variations in trace elements which further differentiate the PES Pallasites from the Main Group.

Eagle Station is one of 25 Kentucky meteorites discovered before 2014. The only other Kentucky Pallasite, Mount Vernon, is a Main Group Pallasite. The main mass of the meteorite is held in the Naturhistorisches Museum in Wiens (Vienna)
