The Djebba mine.

The Djebba calamine mine was located at the foot of Jebel Gorrah, two km to the north. It was granted by decree of 6 May 1876 to the Société de Construction des Batignolles, which at the same time obtained the concession for the railway line from Tunis to the Algerian border. From the Société des Batignolles it went, at the same time as the railway, to the Compagnie Bône-Guekna. The latter, in turn, sold it to the Société de la Vieille-Montagne. A mechanical preparation workshop and a foundry were built.

At the time of the concession's inception, in 1876, the Djebba deposit, known as the Bordj deposit, consisted mainly of a series of galena veins in limestone.
Before 1876, there had been several attempts to exploit this deposit, first by the Tunisian government and then by a Spanish company.
When the presence of calamine was reported in 1891, it led to the resumption of work in 1897. Large-scale production at the Djebba mine took place during the three years 1897-1898-1899 and totalled about 3,400 tons.
