A gypsum-anhydrite occurrence/quarry/mine located on the Gyp Hill Salt Dome, 9.4 km (5.8 miles) SSE of Falfurrias on private land. Operated by the Gulf Gypsum Company. Last produced in 1942.
Mineralization is a gypsum-anhydrite deposit in caprock of a piercement salt dome with outcrops of caprock. The exposed selenite deposit covers and area of 50 acres.
Workings include surface openings (the topo map reflects an open cast mine/quarry symbol labeled "mine" at this point).
Structure: Piercement Salt Dome
Tectonics: Rio Grande Salt Basin
Deposit: Caprock outcrops. Depth to salt 895 ft. Salt volume 2.3 cu mi to 10,560 ft depth. Exposed selenite (gypsum) deposit covers an area of 50 ac.
