The Hannans North Gold Mine adjoined to the south of the Reefer's Eureka mine, on the same line of lode. By the 1920's it was the most developed of the Kalgoorlie mines north of the Golden Mile, with a shaft down to 600 feet. There were also large open cuts either side of the outcrop, although by the 1920's, these had been abandoned, and the walls were collapsing. The lode with quartz veins crossing it, dipped 67 degrees west from the surface, but straightened from 300 feet down.
In the 1930's. B.H.P. took over, and it became a significant mine production wise from this date. GML 5350E.
The mine was initially developed by an English company, the Hannans North Gold Mining Company, with 100 000 pounds capital. Little information was found, but the 10 head battery was shut down in 1903.
In 1919, the North End Development Syndicate controlled the lease, however shortly after Harry Raven takes over. Failing to float a company in Kalgoorlie to develop the mine, Raven sells it in October 1923, to the Great Boulder Proprietary Company. They take out several crushings, but could not make the mine profitable as the ore had to carted to their mill at Boulder. The mine closed again in 1926.
By this stage the Hannans North, Hannans North Extended and Golden Zone leases are owned by the one party. In turn the Hannans Star and Napoleon leases had been amalgamated with the above, all formerly 12 acres each.
Broken Hill Proprietary had the mine on option from 1931, then purchased the mine in June 1933 for 3000 pounds, and operated it continuously until 1950. The prior Great Boulder company had produced 8980 tonnes of ore for 6365 ounces of gold, but was set for a major expansion. Between 1932 to 1938 alone the mine produced 84 815 tonnes of ore for 36 178 ounces of gold.
During the 1930's, the company suffered several strikes, usually involving the dismissal of an employee, resulting in the rest of the workforce walking off the job.
Allan McCrae (32) was held at gunpoint in the plant by two masked robbers in 1939, with 1100 pounds money-wise of gold stolen. Charles Egan (52), John Crofton Sadlier (39), both miners from Kalgoorlie were charged with the robbery, while Thomas Egan (64) was charged with trying to pervert the course of justice.
