Ordinary chondrite (H5)
Fell, 13 July 1930; 16.7 kg, single stone
A single meteoritic stone fell. The description by Mason & Wiik (1961) is characteristic for the H5 ordinary chondrite group (high bulk iron with some moderately well defined chondrules). The dominant silicates are olivine (Fa19) and orthopyroxene. The more important minor phases include the more or less expected diopside, plagioclase, troilite and Fe-Ni metal (kamacite, taenite, and plessite). Smaller amounts of chromite, merrillite, and traces of copper are present with several additional very minor opaques (oxides and sulfides) reported by Ramdohr (1973).
A cosmic ray exposure age of ~ 4.1 Ma has been reported.
Miller (Arkansas) was one of 172 witnessed falls listed exactly as an H5 with The Meteoritical Bulletin Data BaseKlas in March 2016. The H group of ordinary chondrites account for a little more than 35% of all fully classified meteorite falls. H5's are by far the most common petrologic type within the group. The main mass has been with the American Museum of Natural History (New York).
What's in a name? — The proper name for the meteorite is 'Miller (Arkansas)' as a small 'Miller (Kansas)' meteorite was recovered in 1950 in Lyon Co., Kansas.
