The history of this mine is poorly documented, but it has been said (A. Kvalheim?) that this deposit was already known before 1721, and it was initially worked for copper.
During the 1930's it was prospected for iron ore, mainly magnetite.
The mine is a water-filled adit, 22 m long in EW-direction, and 8-10 m in NS-direction.
In the south wall some of the ore can be observed, as a 1 m wide zone comprising pyrrhotite/chalcopyrite in a medium-grained pyroxene-garnet-epidote skarn.
The NGU registered other, nearby prospects as part of this registration, but are individually listed at Mindat:
-Kvernavatnet
-Gammelsmehaugen sør I
-Gammelsmehaugen sør II
A sample collected by Danish geology professor Svend Pedersen from a locality NE of the Helene mine, is in the collection of the Evje og Hornnes geomuseum Fennefoss.
