Travertine deposits.
One travertine deposit is located around the Saturnia village, at an elevation of 260–300 m asl. This deposit occupies an old morphological depression, which now appears as a morphological high (Poggio di Saturnia) due to a relief inversion process.
Another large plate of travertine is located on the right side of Albegna valley, an elevation of 190–265 m asl in the area of Poggio Bagno Santo. The deposit is correlated with alluvial terraces along the present flow pattern of Albegna river, with top-depositional surfaces at 220–230 m asl, which testify an important phase of deposition and a temporary rising of the local base-level (Bosi et al., 1996).
Presently, travertine is forming at an elevation of 135–156 m asl downstream of the Saturnia spring.
According to De Angelis d'Ossat (1902), cinnabar was found between Fosso Gatta and Albegna River, to the NE of Saturnia village: in unaltered marly limestone and Eocene sandstone, as well as in marls and clays originated from alteration of Eocene rocks, in association with sulphur, gypsum, iron and manganese oxides; in the Pliocene conglomerate and sandy limestone occurring near Albegna River; in detrital soils. Exploitation attempts were performed at Saturnia-Poggietti (see coordinates) in the period 1920-1927. Later, the presence of tiny cinnabar grains in a surface detrital formation near Saturnia was described by Lotti (1928). Zucchetti (1964) reported the presence of dispersed cinnabar in the Pliocene clay formation, located below the village of Saturnia. Cinnabar appears: as tiny detrital individuals in the superficial sandy portion of such formation and also in the surrounding farmlands; as incrustations on pyrite concretions and on mostly pyritised or marcasitised plant remains, embedded in a deeper clay horizon. Here, also large transparent prismatic crystals of gypsum occur. According to Del Caldo et al. (1973), clay accumulations containing large gypsum crystals are situated on the right of the road SP 10 (towards Saturnia-Catabbio-Semproniano), just after the fork leading to Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort and Pitigliano.
