Shadow Lake area


The village of Norland is next to Shadow Lake. The area has numerous mineral occurrences associated with metamorphosed marbles (tremolite) and pegmatites (molybdenite, uranium mineralization).

Recently, with the help of local collectors, interesting skarn zones as well as an amazonite body have been discovered.

Norland is almost entirely comprised of Private Property. Any haphazard exploring will almost certainly result in trespassing. Please do your research and communicate with landowners if necessary.

Actinolite
Formula: ◻Ca2(Mg4.5-2.5Fe0.5-2.5)Si8O22(OH)2
Albite
Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
Albite var. Peristerite
Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
Habit: small 3-4 centimeter patches in the feldspar, almost always separate from the amazonite.
Colour: beige-white with blue(sometimes yellow) schiller
Description: Occurs in a pegmatite alongside amazonite, microcline, biotite mica, smoky quartz, hematite and small orange baryte rosettes in cavities. Colour varies from beige to white, with predominantly pale blue but also yellow Schiller.
'Allanite Group' ?
Formula: (A12+REE3+)(M13+M23+M32+)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Habit: slender, wide, brown-red, rusted crystals
Colour: brown-red rusted
Description: occurs sparingly in the tremolite-skarn section of the locality, it is brown-red due to weathering and rust from hematite and limonite.
Baryte
Formula: BaSO4
Habit: forms as rosettes, sometimes as thin layers where faint blades can be seen.
Colour: orange-beige-white
Description: Occurs as orange rosettes, possibly because of hematite staining, in cavities of red microcline and as thin layers on amazonite and microcline, associated with hematite staining.

Habit: small translucent hexagonal crystals
Colour: gray, clear, white
Description: Occurs as small gray translucent hexagonal crystals, few are known from the area. They were identified informally by the Royal Ontario Museum.

Habit: un-terminated crystals, only a couple centimeters long
Colour: Dark orange-brown
Description: Forms in marbles adjacent to a pegmatite in Norland, associated with purple-gray scapolite and phlogopite mica, also green-yellow tremolite. Forms as dark orange-brown un-terminated crystals embedded in the weathering calcite.

Habit: tiny crystals
Colour: orange-brown, red-brown
Description: In a granite and skarn they occur as tiny red-brown and orange-brown crystals respectively, associated with vesuvianite and pyrite.

Habit: as oxide stains or inclusions in quartz crystals
Colour: red, orange, metallic
Description: Forms as oxide stains lining cavities in a microcline pegmatite or as inclusions in quartz crystals.
Microcline
Formula: K(AlSi3O8)
Description: Occurs in pegmatite, varies in colour from orange-red to white-beige
Microcline var. Amazonite
Formula: K(AlSi3O8)
Habit: non-crystalline, grades from microcline
Colour: apple-green to deep teal
Description: Occurs in a pegmatite alongside peristerite, microcline, biotite mica, smoky quartz, hematite and small orange baryte rosettes in cavities. Colour varies from light-apple-green to deep teal.
