The quarry of the Michellerie works on the limestone called "Limestone de Beauce" dating from the upper Aquitanian. The upper surface of the limestone layer presents lenses of sand and clay that belong to the "Sands of the Orléanais, Sands of Lozère" dated from the Burdigalian. These sands brought by the rivers from the Massif Central contain very few heavy minerals. Despite this, a search for sapphire has been undertaken.
Gaétan Bouclet, alluvial prospector, has managed to find a series of very small grains of sapphire. "It took a lot of work, but now it is a satisfaction" as he says.
