The Smoky Hill Valley is underlain by the Smoky Hill Chalk Member of the Niobrara Formation, famous for its fossil content. The Niobrara Formation extends into eastern Nebraska. Washes and gullies which cut into the strata occasionally have yielded limonite concretions, sometimes called "pop rocks". A similar concretion from an unlocated place in the Formation has been trademarked "Boji Stone". The Monument Rocks and Castle Rocks in Smoky Hill Valley are a popular tourist attraction.
