Salt deposits from Upper Eocene age, located in the extensive "Conca Potàssica Catalana" (Catalonian Potassic Basin). Unlike those in Cardona and Suria, the evaporite layers are subhorizontal, with few deformations since deposition. The Sallent-Balsareny area was exploited later than others in the Basin. Potassium salts were mined from 1929 onward. Thus, in 1950´s years were exploited around 250.000 tons of potasium salts a year. Halite is currently exploited as a "byproduct" of the potash mining, and is mainly used for road maintenance in winter.
Since 1972 the mining works between Sallent and Balsareny are unified.
