Iron meteorite [Ni, plessitic octahedrite (IAB-sHL, O-pl-an)
Fall 11 Apr 1964; 1.245 kg, 2 pieces
Late in the evening two pieces of Fe-Ni rich metal (~13% Ni) were recovered after thunderous sounds had been heard in the region and strong hissing sounds were heard in the immediate vicinity of the recovered pieces. The larger piece (1.092 kg) had created a small crater 9 cm wide and 13.5 cm deep. The smaller piece landed 3 km further to the SW. The matrix of the meteorite itself is mostly ataxitic (~75%?), but close examination reveals several different regions where the kamacite spindles and kamacite-taenite intergrowths have more traditionally defined plessitic or even octahedral features. Deformed Neumann bands in kamacite and sheared schreibersite zones are two of several indicators that this meteorite has experienced perhaps more than its fair share of pre-terrestrial impacts before its long journey ended. Schreibersite, usually monocrystalline and often brecciated, is the most obvious accessory. [Troilite was not observed in the smaller 153 g mass] observed by Buchwald (1975).] Oxides in the fusion crust are also noted here.
Classification Update: The 'IAB complex' of iron meteorites represents approximately 25% of all recovered iron meteorites. 18 IAB irons belong to the IAB-sHL (Hi-Au, low-Ni) subgroup. Of these, only two — Magnesia (fall of 1899) and Muzaffarpur — are witnessed falls.
