The Providence meteorite was found in 1903 in an orchard where it had become exposed at the surface of the ground. W .T. Yeager, the discoverer, was unaware of its true character but kept it as a curiosity because of its weight. In 1938 it was purchased by the University of Kentucky and was eventually deposited in the U.S. National Museum. The mass has apparently been exposed to shock intensities of well over 100 kbar. Fe-Ni metal (8-9% Ni) is predominantly kamacite with associated taenite, but plessite and taenite cover ~ 35% of the surface. Troilite is found in one particularly conspicuous nodule, but is otherwise quite minor. In the main schreibersite is uniformly distributed as small bodies. Daubréelite is found as small bodies scattered in Kamacite.

14 of 25 Kentucky meteorites are iron finds and, of these, 6 are IIIAB irons. Like Providence, most of them were discovered in clearing the land or tending the newly created farmland.
